Laurie Penman has published more than thirty clock related books including this series and he taught the subject for forty years. The original; correspondence course had its beginnings in the 1980s and has evolved to the present production with the addition of digital illustrations, desk cams and Skype. The full set of course books comprise over twenty volumes each of which covers specific tasks and skill sets. The books are now offered individually and in sub-sets as elements of a stand- alone distance learning course. This allows the progressive purchase of the books of most interest and when needed; facilitating the spreading of purchase costs. The course books are designed to provide the detailed information needed for repairing clocks and replacing worn or lost parts such as gears, other parts of the mechanism, worn pivots and pivot holes. Twelve of the books include exercises covering invisible bushing, pivot making and refurbishing, simple turning, repairing and mounting gear wheels, accurate filing, the design and making of the various parts of a rack striking mechanism and escapement correction and design. There are twenty four in the series at the moment (October 2015) and others will be added and announced on the website www.clockrepairandrestoration.co.uk

Using the designing and building of the Clock of the Long Now as a framework, this is a book about the practical use of long time perspective: how to get it, how to use it, how to keep it in and out of sight. Here are the central questions it inspires: How do we make long-term thinking automatic and common instead of difficult and rare? Discipline in thought allows freedom. One needs the space and reliability to predict continuity to have the confidence not to be afraid of revolutions Taking the time to think of the future is more essential now than ever, as culture accelerates beyond its ability to be measured Probable things are vastly outnumbered by countless near-impossible eventualities. Reality is statistically forced to be extraordinary; fiction is not allowed this freedom This is a potent book that combines the chronicling of fantastic technology with equally visionary philosophical inquiry.
