This book is a collection of essays from MacroPolo, the think tank of the Paulson Institute in Chicago. The picture of China that emerges in this volume is one built from the ground up, across economics, politics, and technology. In addition, because China’s rise has important global dimensions, a US-China section composed of two essays is included, which combine both a macro perspective and a view of the bilateral relationship through the history of a significant multinational firm. Finally, this volume will include an original introduction and conclusion by Damien Ma, editor and co-founder of MacroPolo. The essays are analytically driven and provide novel perspectives, context, granular data, and policy conclusions that get lost in the daily churn of news cycles. None of the essays in this volume focuses on national security or geopolitics. Rather, the volume grapples squarely with how China’s domestic economic, political, and technological developments have transformed not only itself but also the world at large.

China's extraordinarily rapid economic growth since 1978, driven by market-oriented reforms, has set world records and continued unabated, despite predictions of an inevitable slowdown. In The State Strikes Back: The End of Economic Reform in China?, renowned China scholar Nicholas R. Lardy argues that China's future growth prospects could be equally bright but are shadowed by the specter of resurgent state dominance, which has begun to diminish the vital role of the market and private firms in China's economy. Lardy's book arrives in timely fashion as a sequel to his pathbreaking Markets over Mao: The Rise of Private Business in China, published by PIIE in 2014. This book mobilizes new data to trace how President Xi Jinping has consistently championed state-owned or controlled enterprises, encouraging local political leaders and financial institutions to prop up ailing, underperforming companies that are a drag on China's potential. As with his previous book, Lardy's perspective departs from conventional wisdom, especially in its contention that China could achieve a high growth rate for the next two decades—if it reverses course and returns to the path of market-oriented reforms.

This book is unique in covering all important topics of the Chinese economy in depth but written in a language understandable to the layman and yet challenging to the expert. Beginning with entrepreneurship that propels the dynamic economic changes in China today, the book is organized into four broad parts to discuss China's economic development, to analyze significant economic issues, to recommend economic policies and to comment on the timely economic issues in the American economy for comparison.Unlike a textbook, the discussion is original and thought-provoking. It is written by a most distinguished economist who has studied the Chinese economy for thirty years, after making breathtaking contributions to the fields of econometrics, applied economics and dynamic economics and serving as a major adviser to the government of Taiwan during its period of rapid development in the 1960s and 1970s. In the last thirty years, the author has served as a major adviser to the government of China on economic reform and important economic policies and cooperated with the Ministry of Education to introduce and promote the development of modern economics in China, including training hundreds of economists in China and placing many graduate students to pursue a doctoral degrees in economics in leading universities in the US and Canada. These graduates now plays pivotal roles in China and in the US in academics, business or government institutions. The essays, a culmination of the author's expertise in China over five decades, are being widely read in China. When the author became professor emeritus at Princeton, the University named the Econometric Research Program as the Gregory C Chow Econometric Research Program in his honor.

In order to understand China's current economic miracle, it is essential to thoroughly study the true picture of China's economy before the arrival of the West in the mid-19th century. This volume collects the internationally influential Chinese economic historian Prof. Li Bozhong’s influential academic work written in English over several decades, focusing on how to abandon the previously prevailing Western-centric historical viewpoint and recognize the changes in China's economic history during the Ming and Qing dynasties from a new perspective. The selected papers are divided into two main categories: macro-level presentations and reports delivered at major international historical events, and specialized research on economic history, with a particular focus on the economic history of the Jiangnan region during the Ming and Qing Dynasties and comparative economic history between China and the West. The book aims to promote international exchanges in the field of Chinese economic history and expand the international vision of the younger generation of economic historians in our country. Upon compilation and publication, this volume will further promote international exchanges in Chinese economic history and enhance the international vision of young economists. Prof. Li Bozheng, born in Kunming, Yunnan Province in 1949, graduated from Xiamen University. He is among the first batch of master's and doctoral degree recipients in history following the restoration of the degree system in new China, and also a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan in the United States. Currently, he serves as a Humanities Chair Professor at Peking University. In 1998, Prof. Li Bozheng joined Tsinghua University, and founded the Tsinghua University Center for Chinese Economic History. He has held various roles, including consultant, director of the History Department, and director of the Institute of Intellectual and Cultural Studies. In 2009, he joined the Tsinghua University Academy of Sinology. Throughout his career, Prof. Li Bozheng has been a guest professor at numerous universities, including the French School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences, the London School of Economics and Political Science (Department of Economic History), Keio University (Faculty of Economics), Harvard University (Department of East Asian Civilizations and Languages), the University of Michigan (History Department), the California Institute of Technology (Division of Humanities and Social Sciences), and the University of California (History Department). A long-term devotee to the study of Chinese economic history, he has published over ten monographs and ninety academic papers in both Chinese and English, making significant contributions to the field.
