Charting The Sustainable Future Of Asean In Science And Technology

This book showcases selected conference papers addressing the sustainable future of ASEAN from the perspectives of science and technology disciplines. In addressing the 17 Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) envisioned by the United Nations in the domains of environment, health and well-being, posing potential means of reducing inequalities globally, the authors target specific issues and challenges confronting the fast-growing region of ASEAN and present suggestions for co-operation and commitment from governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and society at large, in line with the ASEAN Vision 2020. Papers are selected from the 3rd International Conference on the Future of ASEAN (ICoFA) 2019, organised by Universiti Teknologi MARA in Malaysia, whose conference theme “Charting the Sustainable Future of ASEAN” enables intellectual discourse on sustainability issues from science and technology, as well as business and the social sciences. The selection of papers is published in two books, comprised of scholarly and practical insights on sustainability in ASEAN. This book from science and technology scholars is of interest to researchers and policymakers interested in sustainability developments in the ASEAN region.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th Annual SmartCity360° Summit which was organized in November 2021 in Porto, Portugal. Due to COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held virtually. Processing of fruits produces large volumes of wastes and by-products, which can create environmental problems. However, these fruit processing residues have amazing nutritional composition, containing good amounts nutrients and biofunctional components. So, the current trend in the present world it to efficiently utilize these fruit wastes and byproducts and minimizing their impact on the environment. Proper utilization of fruit processing wastes and by‐Products would not only emerge as a source of extra profit to the fruit processing industry but also will help in lessen the environment pollution due to these fruit processing byproducts. ‘Handbook of Fruit Wastes and By‐Products: Chemistry, Processing Technology and Utilization’ will be the first book devoted to fruit processing wastes and by-products of wide range of important fruits including tropical, subtropical, and temperate fruits. The abstracts in this book cover a wide range of topics, including algebra, analysis, logic, computer architecture, algorithms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer network, netcentric computing and many more. The work presented here is both theoretical and practical, and has the potential to impact many areas of society, from finance and healthcare to education and security.

Faced with climate changes, pest pressure on plants is increasing and new pest complexes are appearing, for which plant protection solutions are not yet available. The reduction of anthropic pressure on agroecosystems requires a reduction in the use of chemical inputs and the promotion of biocontrol approaches. In this book, we present new advances on plant disease management that are emerging from research outputs. The ability of biocontrol products to directly (e.g. production of antimicrobial peptides or quorum quenching activities by microorganisms, use of plant or agro-industrial by-products as biopesticides, etc.) or indirectly (e.g. via the increase of plant defense or plant growth pathways) protect plants against pathogens and pests is also considered. We also address new strategies like the development of phage-based biocontrol products and those that consider the plant as a holobiont and plant microbiota as targets of biocontrol treatments. The important question of the current regulatory process needed to launch plant production products on the market is also addressed, such as methods to evaluate their environmental impact.
