Canadian Guidelines For Sexual Health Education

These guidelines propose a framework for evaluating existing sexual health education programs & policies and related services available to Canadians. They are also meant to guide professionals in the development of new & effective programs that reinforce behaviours that support sexual health, and offer educators & administrators a broader understanding of the goals & objectives of sexual health education. The document begins with key concepts, and provides a definition, philosophy, & principles of sexual health education. This is followed by an outline of the components of sexual health education and checklists & guidelines for addressing the principles (accessibility, comprehensiveness, effectiveness, training & administrative support, planning & evaluation). The final section discusses the importance of theory & research in sexual health education. The appendix includes examples of criteria to use in assessing programs in relation to the principles found in these guidelines.

This document proposes a framework that accommodates general principles for the development and delivery of sexual health education. Guideline statements support each principle and provide a frame of reference for effective sexual health education programs and policies in Canada.
