Excerpt from Butter Tests of Registered Jersey Cows The butter records in this volume arc those reported to the Club from Aug. 1, 1898, to July 15, 1902. Except those designated "confirmed," they have been received for publication on the affidavits of the managers of the tests or the certificates of the owners of the cows tested. The tests designated "confirmed" were made in accordance with the rule of the Club requiring the application of the Babcock method of ascertaining the butter-fat at each milking by an appointee of the Club, or by the officials of any State, Provincial or national experiment station, in confirmation of the amount of butter produced by churning. The tests are arranged alphabetically. When a number of tests of the same animal occur, they are arranged in order of date, if for sevendays, and according to period, if for longer, theshorter periods comingfirst. All tests are for the period of seven days, unless Otherwise stated. In the list of Tested Cows in Order of Merit as butter-producers, the best record only of each animal is given. In the list of Sires with their Tested Daughters, arranged alphabetically, the names of the tested cows are arranged under their sires' names according to the amounts of their tests, the largest coming first. When an animal has more than one test, the largest only is given. The same arrangement hasbeenfollowed in the list of Dams with their Tested Daughters. Excerpt from Butter Tests of Jerseys; Being a Collection of Tests of Registered Jersey Cows, Wherein the Yield Has Amounted to Fourteen Pounds or More Per Week; Brought Down to the First of January, 1884, Vol. 1: To Which Are Added Tables of Sires and Dams of Fourteen-Pound Cows, and Three Essays on Subjects Connected With the Breeding and Testing of Jersey Cattle When we came to revise the list of 1882 and incorporate it with the new one, some errors were detected, and it was found that the original evidence in the case of a few tests, then satisfactorily certified to us, had been lost or mislaid. These tests, four or five in number, consequently appear in this book without the names of the persons making them. No effort has been spared to have our lists as complete as possible. We advertised in the leading stock journals, sent circulars to all mem bers of the American Jersey Cattle Club, and mailed applications for information to every person that we could hear of as at any time the owner of a cow for which a test was claimed. This part of our work was extremely laborious, and we have to acknowledge our obligations for valuable assistance in it to Mr. J. H. Walker, of Worcester, Mass, and Mr. J. L. Shallcross, of Louisville, Ky., who kindly permitted us to have copies of extensive lists which they had compiled for their private use also to the officers of the Club for information furnished from the office of the secretary. The whole number of reported tests investigated by us was about twelve hundred, and as many of the cows had passed through the hands of a half dozen owners, ten or fifteen letters frequently had to be written about one animal. Some of the tested cows had very long pedigrees, going back'ten I or twelve generations, and to print them Iin full would have delayed the publication of this book and added seriously to its cost. A little examination showed that all that was valuable or instructive in a pedigree was almost invariably indicated in the first three crosses, or could be added in a brief foot-note. We decided therefore to tabulate the pedigrees only to the first three crosses, showing every animal which gave as much as twelve and a half per cent of its blood to the tested cow. Where a cow has a seven-day test and also a longer test, she stands in our tables on her week's test. This. Is the case with Jersey Belle, of Scituate and Eurotas. In a number of cases, tests longer than a week, and indicating excellent capacity, are reported for cows which have no seven-day tests. These are thrown together in the table marked No. II. Excerpt from Butter Tests of Jerseys, Vol. 2: Being a Collection of Tests of Registered Jersey Cows, Wherein the Yield Has Amounted to Fourteen Pounds or More Per Week; Brought Down to the First of January, 1886 In the introduction to Vol. I. The writer gave at some length his reasons for believing that no one family could claim pre-eminence among Jersey cattle. Time has only strengthened that opinion. The evidence in favor of the butter yielding power of the breed is vastly greater than it was three years ago. But whether we take all the tests above 20 lbs. Per week, or the whole number of tests in our two volumes, as a basis of comparison, we shall find that. No one family can claim an undisputed lead.
