Excerpt from Buffalo Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 2: August, 1862 The following report of cases which were under treatment in the surgical wards of the Buffalo General Hospital, covers a period of four months. Viz: from March lst to July lst. It is presented with comments on the cases, not with the expectation of presenting any very new experience, but with the purpose of setting forth the ordinary clinical facts which came under notice, having perhaps less variety and less novelty than might be met with at Other periods of hospital service. Our hospitals afford the most favors ble field for clinical observation, and the facts there met with, even if they do not go beyond the limits of the most ordinary experience, should be col looted in some accessible form. Excerpt from Buffalo Medical and Surgical Journal, 1888, Vol. 23 In 1826 Dr. John Davy recognized it in the atmosphere and published a formula for the preparation of chemical tests for its detection. In 1839, Christian Frederick Schonbein, Professor of Chem istry at Basle, and the inventor of gun-cotton, while engaged in some experiments on the decomposition of water by voltaic electricity, was astonished at the development of a peculiar odor similar to that emitted during discharges from the electrical machine. He showed that it was due to the existence of a body possessing, like oxygen, the property of most readily entering into chemical combinations. His announcement of this, and subsequent communications, drew the attention of the scientific world to the remarkable properties of this rediscovered body which he named ozone, from a Greek word signifying to emit an odor. During the forty years which have since elapsed, most of the scientists of the century have studied ozone, and I only refrain from giving their names and special discoveries from lack of space. Over and above them all, by common consent, towers the name of Schonbein, whose preliminary discoveries invited attention to its study, and whose zeal never wavered till his grand genius passed on to that illimitable existence where all mysteries are explained. Excerpt from The Buffalo Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 27: August, 1887, to July, 1888 The criticism offered by the editor is as follows: It is, we venture to say, highly improbable that the researches above described will have much weight against the long-continued and careful observations of a trained mycologist like Koch. The societies represented by these four men are the leading organizations of Great Britain in scientific research, but I doubt. Excerpt from The Buffalo Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 25: August, 1884, to July, 1888 It is by no means a rare thing to find patients voiding bloody urine. If the blood is in small quantity, and especially if it comes from the kidney, the patient may not recognize it, and even a physician may easily overlook it; but when in sufficient quantity to give the urine its distinctive red color it never fails to cause great alarm to the patient and an immediate appeal for medical aid.
