Blend Phonics Lessons and Stories is a complete phonics reading program. It is unique in that it provides lessons in phonics, decodable stories, and comprehension questions. It develops fluency in decoding and helps students learn to pay attention so they can comprehend what they read. Spelling words are included with every lesson. The program will enable students to gain total linguistic function. It is based on the instructional sequence in Hazel Loring's 1980 Reading Made Easy with Blend Phonics for First Grade. Reading Made Easy with Blend Phonics for First Grade was first published in 1980 by Hazel Logan Loring, who had taught it for many years in her first grade classes. It features instruction in directional guidance, which helps prevent reversals in reading. It has also proven very valuable in helping older students with reading problems. The accompanying Blend Phonics Fluency Drills were written by Mr. Donald L. Potter to help students to develop high levels of decoding fluency (accuracy and speed). The Fluency Drills have proven particularly valuable in helping struggling readers to overcome the whole-word guessing habit and improve reading efficiency.

Beyond Blend Phonics is designed as a followup to any good phonics program such as Mr. Potter's Blend Phonics Lessons and Stories. Beyond Blend Phonics teaches the three main Levels of Advanced English Morphology (word prefixes, suffixes, and roots) based on the language of origin. Words of Anglo-Saxon, Latin, French, and Greek origin are taught. Mr. Potter used a unique dual sentence approach to teaching word meanings that he learned from Dr. George Gonzalez, when Mr. Potter was a bilingual teacher, teaching English words to Spanish speaking students. The procedures pairs a new word in one sentence with a simple word the students know in another sentence. The approach is natural and easy.
