First Collection of Poetry from Octavia Saturday, who grew up in SW Michigan. Water is a big part of her internal landscape. She writes about what is in her head that needs to bleed out. All the life experiences that have led her to where she's at and who she is. Octavia lived in quite a few places that have influenced her personally, and her writing, such as DC, Detroit, LA, New Orleans, Savannah, etc. These days she's happily back into her little wet corner of Michigan, where she's working on new poetry and prose that may turn out to be another book. To unify her family, Ave Maria must harness the power of love and its abiding truth in this lyrical and heartfelt novel, the third installment of the New York Times bestselling Big Stone Gap series “Trigiani can make you laugh in one sentence then break your heart in the next.”—Mississippi Clarion-Ledger Ave Maria Mulligan MacChesney has never been a devotee of tarot cards or crystal balls. And yet when the fortune-teller at the county fair suggests that it is time for her to “redream” her life, Ave Maria realizes she is wide open to suggestion. Not a bad idea considering that her beloved daughter, Etta, is growing up fast. In the face of the trials of adolescence, Ave Maria tries to prepare herself for the day when Etta will rebel big-time. Of course, everyone in Big Stone Gap sees it’s coming: Cranky cashier Fleeta has warned her, county sexpert Iva Lou has consoled her, even Pearl, now a mother herself, has lent her sympathy—but that doesn’t make the changes in Etta any easier to handle. Milk Glass Moon chronicles the challenges Ave Maria faces in her parenting and in her marriage, with more surprising twists and turns than on the mountain roads of southwest Virginia. Download Perfectly Dead Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Chief Inspector Jacobson hates drug-related cases. Not least because it means he has to work with the drug squad. But there's no alternative when a local dealer turns up burnt, battered and dead. Just another hopeless, pointless sink estate incident in the middle of a grey, Crowby February. But even so Dave Carter's torched body is the stuff of bad dreams. Death doesn't get any grimmer, Jacobson thinks. But that's because Jacobson, DS Kerr and Crowby CID are still forty-eight hours away from the 'Perfect Family' killings ... five dead in a leafy suburb where bad things aren't supposed to happen. And the only witness may never speak again.

Download Materialities of Ritual in the Black Atlantic Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Focusing on everyday rituals, the essays in this volume look at spheres of social action and the places throughout the Atlantic world where African–descended communities have expressed their values, ideas, beliefs, and spirituality in material terms. The contributors trace the impact of encounters with the Atlantic world on African cultural formation, how entanglement with commerce, commodification, and enslavement and with colonialism, emancipation, and self-rule manifested itself in the shaping of ritual acts such as those associated with birth, death, healing, and protection. Taken as a whole, the book offers new perspectives on what the materials of rituals can tell us about the intimate processes of cultural transformation and the dynamics of the human condition.

When the attack on Pearl Harbor occurs, sixth-grader David is a Japanese child who has been raised Christian in America. Suddenly, many people view David and his family as the enemy. Japanese Americans found themselves sent to evacuation centers. They could bring only what they could carry, and most of their belongings were either sold or stolen in their absence. David could hardly believe it was happening; wasnt America supposed to be the land of the free? Davids family was sent to Poston I, where 10,000 people dwelled in barracks surrounded by barbed wire and secured by armed guards. The living space was minimal, and privacy was nonexistent. Even so, there was a sense of hope, as people found time to laugh and attend church. The church brought Christians together from all across the West Coast, and David made friends that would last long after the evacuation centers closed. Following Davids familys stay in Americas makeshift Japanese prison, they moved to Chicago, where Davids true path to adulthood began. Surrounded by gang fights consisting of white versus black, the Japanese new kid had nowhere to goexcept to God, who would find a way to show David how to live a life of peace amidst chaos, love within hate, and ultimately salvation in the depths of damnation.
