Beyond Conception is a feminist critique of the new reproductive and genetic technologies whose impact has been most apparent since the birth of the first test-tube baby. The author finds that these technologies are not created in women's interest. Instead, they require the subordination of women to science.

The first full-length study of Jean Piaget as a philosopher and evolutionist. Messerly traces Piaget's earliest conjectures about knowledge through its further developments to its mature formulation as 'genetic epistemology.' Messerly analyzes Piaget's constructivist theory of the evolution of human knowledge as continuous with, yet partially transcending, the biological process of adaptation to the environment. Messerly's study serves as an invitation to further explorations with Paiget's theory and will interest philosophers, biologists, and psychologists.

In nine lively essays, bioethicist J. David Velleman challenges the prevailing consensus about assisted suicide and reproductive technology, articulating an original approach to the ethics of creating and ending human lives. He argues that assistance in dying is appropriate only at the point where talk of suicide is not, and he raises moral objections to anonymous donor conception. In their place, Velleman champions a morality of valuing personhood over happiness in making end-of-life decisions, and respecting the personhood of future children in making decisions about procreation. These controversial views are defended with philosophical rigor while remaining accessible to the general reader. Written over Velleman's 30 years of undergraduate teaching in bioethics, the essays have never before been collected and made available to a non-academic audience. They will open new lines of debate on issues of intense public interest.

An in-depth study of lesbian, bi, and queer women's experiences of thinking about and trying to become a parent, Beyond Expectation draws on eighty-two narrative interviews conducted during the late 1990s in British Columbia. Jacquelyne Luce chronicles these women's experiences, which took place from 1980 to 2000, during a period that saw significant changes to the governance of assisted reproduction and the status of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender parents and same-sex partners. Beyond Expectation looks closely at the changing contexts in which women's experiences occurred and draws attention to complex issues such as 'contracting' relationships, mediating understandings of biology and genetics, and decision-making amidst various social, legal, and medical developments. Luce skillfully juxtaposes the stories of her interviewees with the wider public discourses about lesbian/bi/queer parenting and reproductive technology and highlights gaps in existing legislative reforms. Most importantly, Beyond Expectation foregrounds the lived experiences of lesbian, bi, and queer women as they negotiate kinship at the intersection of reproduction, technology, and politics.

"From Beyond" is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was written in 1920 and was first published in The Fantasy Fan in June 1934. The story is told from the first-person perspective of an unnamed narrator and details his experiences with a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast. Tillinghast creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, which stimulates an affected person's pineal gland, thereby allowing them to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of accepted reality. Sharing the experience with Tillinghast, the narrator becomes cognizant of a translucent, alien environment that overlaps our own recognized reality. From this perspective, he witnesses hordes of strange and horrific creatures that defy description. Tillinghast reveals that he has used his machine to transport his house servants into the overlapping plane of reality. He also reveals that the effect works both ways, and allows the alien creature denizens of the alternate dimension to perceive humans. Tillinghast's servants were attacked and killed by one such alien entity, and Tillinghast informs the narrator that it is right behind him. Terrified beyond measure, the narrator picks up a gun and shoots it at the machine, destroying it. Tillinghast dies immediately thereafter as a result of apoplexy. The police investigate the scene and it is placed on record that Tillinghast murdered the servants in spite of their remains never being found. Life begins for us all at conception! The egg is penetrated by the sperm and then, within sixty-five seconds, forty-six chromosomes are cajoled by dopamine! The ecstatic high of dopamine sealed each one of our conceptions in a high of happiness that we all recall! In the very instance called our zero hour, our life began and we not only saw the lights but we were that light spark of life. Life for us began at this point that our parents’ cells were sealed with a happiness called our first high. Even before we had a heart, we had a forebrain that included the thymus gland in our cells when we were just a zygote. We all have a purpose in our DNA that responds to the very “cajoled by dopamine” high when our life cycle began at conception. Our life begins with conception, cycling only around the thymus; and then in maturity, the hypothalamus gland! Every life cajoled by dopamine is remembered in a high of happiness that is shared only of this kind with our DNA parents! Life begins at conception in a dopamine high that seals the two cells of the one male and his chosen female in a place that babies come from—heaven! Come find out what a tank is and how it shoots an army into the highway of heaven. Find out what every child has, including you and yours, and what no child should be born without being cajoled by dopamine with what his DNA is searching for at birth and throughout its life! Discover how two beautiful geraniums line the garden on each side of heaven. Only males can go to the pillars of heaven, kneeling in humbling minds at the doors of heaven that are called tulips! Find out that heaven is a place you either have as a female or a place you can love to go as a male. Now that you are curiously amused, get a cup of peaceful tea and let’s read about how we all are cajoled by dopamine!
