Performing arts in most parts of Maritime Southeast Asia are seen as an entity, where music and dance, sound and movement, acoustic and tactile elements intermingle and complement each other. Although this fact is widely known and referenced, most scholarly works in the performing arts so far have either focused on "music" or "dance" rather than treating the two in combination. The authors in this book look at both aspects in performance, moreover, they focus explicitly on the interrelation between the two, on both descriptive-analytical and metaphorical levels. The book includes diverse examples of regional performing art genres from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. All case studies are composed from the perspective of the relatively new approach and field of ethno-choreomusicology. This particular compilation gives an exemplary overview of various phenomena in movement-sound relations, and offers for the first time a thorough study of the phenomenon that is considered essential for the performing arts in Maritime Southeast Asia - the inseparability of movement and sound.

The rock era is over, according to one pop music expert. Another laments that rock music is "metamorphosed into the musical wallpaper of ten thousand lifts, hotel foyers, shopping centers, airport lounges, and television advertisements that await us in the 1990s." Whatever its current role and significance in Anglo-American society, popular music has been and remains a tremendous social and cultural force in many parts of the world. This book explores the connections between popular music genres and politics in Southeast Asia, with particular emphasis on Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Cultural Writing. Music. African Studies. Asian Studies. Book two of Musike. Edited by Shihan de Silva Jayasuriya. SOUNDS OF IDENTITY: THE MUSIC OF AFRO-ASIANS "concerns the survival of musical traditions among Africans who were displaced to Asia. Memories of the ancestral homeland seem to be embedded in these musical traditions. Music is also an important factor in identity formation of diasporas. Music, however, is not always limited to the diaspora and there are spillovers to the host societies"--from the Editor's Introduction. This volume features Amy Catlin-Jairazbhoy on Sidi African music, Aisha Bilkhair Khalifa on Spirit Posession and its practices in Dubai, Lila Ingrams on African connections in Yemeni music, Galia Sabar & Shlomit Kanari on African Musicians in Israel and many more. SOUNDS OF IDENTITY is a compelling, thought provoking exploration of this fascinating musical "border" between cultures.

Download Choreographing Asian America Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Poised at the intersection of Asian American studies and dance studies, Choreographing Asian America is the first book-length examination of the role of Orientalist discourse in shaping Asian Americanist entanglements with U.S. modern dance history. Moving beyond the acknowledgement that modern dance has its roots in Orientalist appropriation, Yutian Wong considers the effect that invisible Orientalism has on the reception of work by Asian American choreographers and the conceptualization of Asian American performance as a category. Drawing on ethnographic and choreographic research methods, the author follows the work of Club O’ Noodles—a Vietnamese American performance ensemble—to understand how Asian American artists respond to competing narratives of representation, aesthetics, and social activism that often frame the production of Asian American performance.
