A first-of-its-kind critical overview of how art leads to moral action in the field of theological ethics One question that remains insufficiently addressed in theological ethics is the question of how art leads to moral action. While many modernist theories consider art to be a morally irrelevant activity, others think that the arts, and the emotions they elicit, are integral to moral formation and justice. Challenging both kinds of theories, Art and Moral Change proposes that art is essential because it is an inevitable source of moral disagreement. Drawing on the work of Jonathan Edwards and many others in theology, philosophy, and literary studies, Art and Moral Change argues that the arts are the cultural mediums through which we can better understand what is morally possible in the midst of difference. The arts, in other words, can serve as snapshots of a particular community's perspectives on the good life, offering glimpses not only of competing moral visions within society but also of the extent to which these contested moral views are reconcilable. Thus, the arts reveal the limits of moral reasoning, confirm the contextuality of moral discernment, and necessitate moral thinking that is dialogical and dialectical. "John Paul Lederach's work in the field of conciliation and mediation is internationally recognized. A theoretical account of moral revolutions, illustrated by historical cases that include the criminalization and decriminalization of abortion and the patient rebellion against medical paternalism. We live in an age of moral revolutions in which the once morally outrageous has become morally acceptable, and the formerly acceptable is now regarded as reprehensible. Attitudes toward same-sex love, for example, and the proper role of women, have undergone paradigm shifts over the last several decades. In this book, Robert Baker argues that these inversions are the product of moral revolutions that follow a pattern similar to that of the scientific revolutions analyzed by Thomas Kuhn in his influential book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. After laying out the theoretical terrain, Baker develops his argument with examples of moral reversals from the recent and distant past. He describes the revolution, led by the utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham, that transformed the postmortem dissection of human bodies from punitive desecration to civic virtue; the criminalization of abortion in the nineteenth century and its decriminalization in the twentieth century; and the invention of a new bioethics paradigm in the 1970s and 1980s, supporting a patient-led rebellion against medical paternalism. Finally, Baker reflects on moral relativism, arguing that the acceptance of “absolute” moral truths denies us the diversity of moral perspectives that permit us to alter our morality in response to changing environments.

"This book takes up the problem of judging works of art using moral standards. When we say that a work is racist, or morally dangerous, what do we mean? The book is divided into two parts. The first part takes up the moral question on its own. What could it mean to say that a work of art (rather than, say, a human being) is immoral? The second part steps back and asks about how moral evaluation fits into the larger task of evaluating artworks. If an artwork is immoral, what does that tell us about how to value the artwork? The overall approach of the book is moderately skeptical. The book argues that many of the reasons given for thinking that works of art are immoral do not stand up to careful scrutiny. It further tries to show that even when works of art are rightly condemned from a moral point of view, the relationship between that moral flaw and their value as artworks is complex. The book defends a moderate version of autonomism between morality and aesthetics. But the real purpose of the book is to highlight the complexities and difficulties in evaluating artworks morally - many philosophers of art have simply assumed that artworks can be evaluated morally and proceeded as though such assessments were unproblematic"--

Street art is a term that has historically specified its site of display: the street. With its increasing mainstream popularity, however, the term "street" has become abstracted from this definition which implies a direct reference to art that is literally painted on the streets to refer to a much broader movement, which is often marked by defining principles rather than a uniform medium or location. This is not to say that street artists do no sometimes perform illegal actions, but that for them, street art is becoming more of an ideology rather than a particular aesthetic style. In other words, street art in not restricted to any medium, format, school, or technique; but instead, is centered around messages. Moral Vandals: Street Artists in the Service of Change, examines the ways in which contemporary street artists have shifted their practices from traditional, vandalistic graffiti to more socially based practices in order to effect more immediate and direct change. These artists dispel the notion of street and graffiti artists as vandals to reveal an ethical dimension of street art practice. This dissertation moves beyond the examination of simple, territorial interventions such as wall painting to examine artists who work with global communities, sometimes much like aid workers, but in the service of their art practice, which has social and moral aims. The traditional ethos of this contemporary street art has evolved into a complex matrix encompassing the ethics of philanthropy, social work, and colonization. This necessarily gives rise to many ethical issues and repercussions. This dissertation aims to reorient the reputation of street art as an outsider practice and situate it as a global contemporary art practice that not only has very real linkages to the high art world, but also aims to better society.

Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Judgment, Thierry de Duve argues in the first volume of Aesthetics at Large, is as relevant to the appreciation of art today as it was to the enjoyment of beautiful nature in 1790. Going against the grain of all aesthetic theories situated in the Hegelian tradition, this provocative thesis, which already guided de Duve’s groundbreaking book Kant After Duchamp (1996), is here pursued in order to demonstrate that far from confining aesthetics to a stifling formalism isolated from all worldly concerns, Kant’s guidance urgently opens the understanding of art onto ethics and politics. Central to de Duve’s re-reading of the Critique of Judgment is Kant’s idea of sensus communis, ultimately interpreted as the mere yet necessary idea that human beings are capable of living in peace with one another. De Duve pushes Kant’s skepticism to its limits by submitting the idea of sensus communis to various tests leading to questions such as: Do artists speak on behalf of all of us? Is art the transcendental ground of democracy? Or, Was Adorno right when he claimed that no poetry could be written after Auschwitz?
