Excerpt from Archives of Radiology and Electrotherapy, Vol. 22: June, 1917 To illuminating engineers the processes involved in luminescence have therefore a direct interest, apart from the wider aspects of these phenomena. One of the most familiar examples of such effects is the firefly, the luminous efficiency of which is believed to be far higher than any existing illuminant, and other insects and marine forms of life have similar properties. The production of light appears to be due to chemical action. The glow of phosphorus (from which the term phosphorescent is derived) in the dark is due to slow oxidation, and luminosity may also be produced by the oxidation of pyrogallic acid and other organic materials. Such effects are termed chemi luminescence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
