Excerpt from Antiquitates Apostolicae, Vol. 1: Or the Lives, Acts, and Martyrdoms of the Holy Apostles of Our Saviour We would gather from this, that a biographer of the apostles, and their first successors, has a wide field open to him which he may traverse with safety and profit; but at the same time imposing on him this strict and uniformly applicable rule, that that species of traditional information only is to be made use of, which is found adopted by those who lived at a period sufiicientl y near the apostolic times to judge of its origin and its authors. Taking this as a primary principle in the selection of in cidents, and in every instance examining them by the rule of analogy and verisimilitude, there will be little danger of our adopting any of those weak inventions by which the superstition of former ages was amused and fostered. Excerpt from Acts of the Apostles, or the History of the Church in the Apostolic Age, Vol. 3 There was only one element which, in the existing circum stances, could have made an impression, and, perhaps, have brought about a favourable issue, viz., that of facts. And, indeed, the Apostle has at his command the domain of facts, and avails himself of them with such power that one might well have expected the Jews to bethink themselves, if only they had quietly considered them, and if their minds had not been utterly darkened. It is this sole strength of his whole position, and nothing else, which Paul, in his discourse, quickly perceives, firmly lays hold of, and keeps fast from the be ginning to the end. Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 1 The first volume of Prolegomena in this work must, therefore, be occupied with the historical aspect of the question. The background of Acts i.-xv. Is' Jewish, that of the last chapters mainly Gentile. The Christian background is common to both, but its characteristics are rapidly changing. The first volume, therefore, deals with these three points - contemporary Jewish history and religion, the organisation and general mental attitude of the world of the Roman Empire, the evolution of the early Christian preaching and ideas. In the second volume the literary phenomena of the book are the subject of investigation. A third volume will deal with the exegesis of the Text. Although various scholars have contributed to these volumes, the Editors are responsible for the whole, as, in order to give the work coherence, they have not scrupled to rearrange, abbreviate, or expand the chapters submitted to them and they are fully sensible of the patience displayed by their fellow-workers in accepting their suggestions. For the present volume the Editors acknowledge with gratitude the help which they have received from Canon Box and from Professor Wensink, as well as from the scholars whose definite contributions are printed. They are also greatly indebted to Miss Edith Coe for much help in the correction of proof. They have endeavoured to indicate their appreciation of the unfailing kindness and great learning of Professor George Foot Moore by dedicating to him this volume. Among many privileges which they have received in the United States they value his help as second only to his friendship.
