H: For the Year Ending February 15, 1896 Once more the time has come in which your committee must give an account of their stewardship. The condition of our schools during the past year has been such as to satisfy, in most cases, the reasonable expectations of our citizens. Some of them we cannot report as successful as we wished to see them. There was evidently trouble in the air good order has not been a prominent feature, yet no serious act of insub ordination has occurred. In most cases harmony and good will have existed between teacher and scholars; where con trary conditions have existed, and we have been let into the heart of things, we have taken prompt measures to correct. A scholar who is disposed to disobey the rules of school, and to see just how far he can go in that direction, should (as Dr. Harris, superintendent of schools in Keene, says), Be talked to not too long, but to be gotten rid of; he is an imposition to the school. We have been much annoyed by non-attendance, in many cases without (so far as we could judge) bona-fide and sufiicient reasons. The Summer term in the Grammar department of No. 5 school closed without a public examination the trouble was outside the school room. The parents withdrew their schol ars from No. 9 school, the fourth week of the Summer term, without notifying the School Board the result was they had no school their until F all. There has been but little money expended in repairs dur ing the past year. A new stove with new pipe was put in the school house in No. 10. There has been glass set in several school houses and some other needed repairs. More money will have to be expended the coming year in order to keep the houses in as good condition as they should be. For the Year Ending February 15, 1903 Good books and abundant supplies are to the teacher what modern machinery and plenty of sharp tools are to the mechanic. Beginning with the lowest grades, children should be taught to take care of their books. As much patience will be needed as in teaching arithmetic. A good deal of damage done is simply the result of ignorance. Pupils need to be shown many little things, for example, how to open a new book for the first time without injury to the binding. They should be directed and encouraged to report any mishap, such as the tearing of a leaf, as soon as it occurs. If every teacher's desk were supplied with repairing materials, the book could quickly be mended. There would be considerable direct saving and the example set the pupils could not fail to have its effect. A pupil who has abused a book never ought to be given a good one in its place unless he pays for it. A child who, on the other hand treats the property loaned him as he should is entitled to books that are in good condition. It is desirable to have an inventory taken every year. In this, the condition as well as the number of the different books should be stated. It would show just where all the books were and prevent some needed in one school remaining unused in another. It would also lead to a distribution according to the needs of the different schools. Without such a system, that teacher is likely to fare best who importunes loudest.
