The FIMAGLOW project is a Nordic project with the aim to study possible drivers and impacts of global warming on Arctic fisheries. Two workshops has been held, serving to identify the relevant set of institutions and people, updating the research community on on-going research projects and initiatives in this realm, and pointing to some critical issues for further research. The material presented in the workshops is collected in this report, which hopefully then may serve as a stepping stone for further explorations of this important issue. This book addresses emerging challenges for the World Ocean in the Anthropocene epoch and the effects of increasing globalisation on the seas. The issues explored in particular include climate change, sustainable fisheries, biodiversity, shipping and regional seas adjoining Europe.

This publication reviews available information on the costs and benefits of climate change adaptation in the fisheries and aquaculture sector, highlights the challenges in applying conventional appraisal and decision support tools to adaptation and reviews emerging frameworks (including low-regret actions, addressing potential lock-in, and early planning for long-term adaptation) as well as economic tools to appraise adaptation options in fisheries and aquaculture.

To date, research on the economic implications of climate change on fisheries has been both limited and fragmented. The contributors to this volume remedy the lack of attention by investigating the economic consequences of pelagic fish fluctuations in the recent past in order to understand how to adapt and respond to future climate changes.

This publication considers issues of global change versus global warming, using climate history graphics to illustrate the earth's climate variability from paleoclimate research. Topics discussed include: the hydrological cycle and its relevance to fisheries and the evolution of species and fisheries variability, production variabilities and changes in vulnerability owing to constant dynamics of ocean motion affects, bioindicators, spatial and temporal scales, regional ecological responses, examples of ocean ecosystems defined by seasonal thermal properties, synchrony and systematic transitions.

As we approach the end of the twentieth century, public and scientific attention is focusing increasingly on the detection and assessment of changes in our environment.
