De Motu animalium is sometimes referred to in the medical literature. But who has read it? The book, originally published in Latin, seemingly constitutes the very first treatise on biomechanics. The author, Giovanni Alfonso Borelli (1608 - 1679), was professor of mathematics and physics in Pisa where he worked with Malpighi, who was professor of theoretical medicine and focused Borelli's interest on the movements of living creatures. This was the time of Galileo, Descartes, Newton and many others, when sciences exploded, sometimes leading to conflicts with religious authorities. De Motu animalium, Borelli's life work, has two parts. In the first part, he analyses the action of the muscles, the movements of the limbs and motions of man and animals, including skating, running, jumping, swimming and flying. The second part deals with what is now called physiology, considered from the point of view of a mechanist: heart beat, blood circulation, breathing, separation of urine from the blood in the kidneys, liver function, reproduction, fatigue, thirst, hunger, fever, and so on. This work shows Borelli to be a genial precursor. He expresses his opinion as a mathematician on problems which afterwards further stimulated the curiosity and endeavours of many generations of researchers. This book will be welcomed by anybody who is interested in the working of living bodies and in the history of human knowledge.

The means of animal communication turn out to be as intriguing and varied as the content that is being communicated, from mating signals and announcements regarding location and food availability to warning alarms and simple tokens of affection and protectiveness. Echolocation, pheromones, bioluminescence, scent marking, tail wagging, nuzzling, the elephant’s trumpet, the honeybee’s waggle dance, and more all get their due in this brief, but surprisingly comprehensive, volume. Perfect for animal lovers and whisperers, while also a useful resource for life science units.

Come face to face with our vanishing wildlife. Using unique Photicular technology, Wild brings to vivid life the animals who are under threat of extinction. It turns abstract numbers and names into touching and unforgettable images. From the cover panda, lazily munching on leaves, to an albatross swooping its magnificent wings, to the hovering bumblebee, among the most critical of threatened animals in terms of its effect on the global food supply, Wild captures eight endangered animals in living motion. We see gorillas at play, a rhinoceros and its baby trotting across the savanna, a pangolin skittering along the landscape, an elephant bathing in a river. An opening essay explores the environmental and economic threats to animal populations and how conservationists are working to slow—and when they can, reverse—the damage. Profiles of each animal accompany the images. Wild joins four other books in the Photicular series—Safari, Ocean, Polar, and Jungle.
