Being alone in that hospital room facing an illness that is life threatening with no family/friend support due to the 2020 Pandemic/Covid-19 protocols reminded me that Jesus was my strength when I am weak. Focusing on my problem solver versus my problem changed my situation from what could have been the end of my story to being a brand-new story of living life with purpose. Jesus was all I had, and all I needed. When I called upon his name, he did not hide his face from me. He sent his angels to encamp all around me, which provided me with a peace that still wow’s me to this day. Facing a health scare that many have lost their lives from can be terrifying. The peace God gave me during this time is unforgettable. Jesus truly is a way-maker, a promise keeper, and a light in the darkness. Come walk in God’s favor with me and leave encouraged knowing great is His mercy towards us. Learn that God is gentle at heart and promises his presence if we diligently seek him. The Lord responded to the devil’s questioning His identity as the Son of God by telling Him that “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4, KJV). From these words, we learn that the Word of God is the perfect response to any trial because Christians ought to live by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, and we are blessed to have it written for us. This is the premise of this devotional- to facilitate the declaration of the Word over one’s life for 40 days. It is to remind the reader of who and what they are in God. It is to energise the weary soul, and to revive the dead spirit. Over the course of 40 days in this devotional, you will speak the Word of God over your life, reclaiming your identity in Him. You will be guided through short prayers that will form the basis of meditation and reflection on biblical truths concerning your life. Why 40 days? Because 40 seems to be a number associated with trial, and triumph throughout biblical scripture. As such, the 40-day journey in this devotional is designed to usher you through trials into a place of triumph using the Word of God.

Christian theology at its core is a story about someone being in trouble. In response to this trouble, the triune God intervenes. God identifies with those in trouble, walking with them through the experience. Yet, the God of Christian theology goes a step further. God prevails over trouble. God is an overcomer. Black women with breast cancer identify with this God. They also see themselves in this theological narrative. They see themselves in the midst of troubles, troubles like racism, poverty and environmental exposures that create the disease affecting their bodies. They see the troubles of breast cancer, their biological disposition towards more aggressive cancers, later stage diagnoses, poorer prognoses, diminished quality of care and worse outcomes. Black women also palpably feel the troubles breast cancer brings like fear, physical disfigurement, social isolation, being stereotyped for treatment decisions, abandonment and even death. Black women feel the myriad troubles breast cancer brings. But, Black women also know God in their troubles. They know an active God who identifies with and prioritizes their needs. They know this God, through scripture and experience, as God who puts them front and center. And because they know God as an overcomer and creative force, they know themselves as overcomers. For with God, their troubles do not last always. Black women with breast cancer construct a cultural theology of breast cancer out of knowing God. Borne out of experiences of the Black Church, womanist theology and their intersectional identities of race, class and gender, this theological investigation, informed by anthropology, examines how Black women construct an ontology of who God is and how God operates and gain a God consciousness that shapes their response to the disease. Using pain, faith and testimony as tools to struggle against breast cancer Black survivors’ theology transforms them from victims of breast cancer to change agents. Out of their lives as survivors comes a theology of complex hope- one cognizant of Black women’s breast cancer disparities, yet oriented towards Black women’s achievement of health in the present and the future– a sufficient hope to sustain Black women through it all.

Then the Lord answered me and said: "Write the vision. And make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. God gave me a series of divine vision and then he manifested himself to me in different ways. I have been through many trials and tribulations in my life. I have suffered and persevered through abuse and sickness all through the grace of God. God had a calling and a purpose for my life. He also has a purpose for you. I hope that as you read this book you follow my example of staying true to God and trusting in him. Because it is God who has the final say so in all of our lives. Today, I stand strong and healed and filled with God's Spirit, his goodness and His love and I am washed in his blood. May this book be a blessing and inspiration to you through all of your trials. Know that God will carry you through every trial. He will never leave you and through our weaknesses his glory shines.
