Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, , language: English, abstract: Supply Chain Management and Logistics are the most significant factors for the commercial marine fish supply chain; the study has considered only the Marine Fish Supply Chain (MFSC) for local markets in Sri Lanka. The Supply Chain helps to assess the efficiency of the marketing and distribution system while finding ways to improve well-performed and efficient supply chain management. Objectives were established to analyse marine fish supply chain, its main aspects, and actors and bottlenecks in the local market, understanding and analysing of preventive measurements of bottlenecks to give recommendations. Main bottlenecks are lack of marketing strategies, market structure constrains, lack of proper information flow, and inadequate infrastructure facilities. The study used two data types for the analysis as primary data and secondary data. Primary data was gathered from the responders, i.e. fishermen, consumers, and locations such as primary, wholesale, and retail markets. Secondary data were gathered from government institutions’ reports, text books, printed journals, e-journals, and websites. Recommendations were made according to the findings, which can be used as the corrective and preventive measures. The study analysed data using most suitable analytical methods including fishbone analysis, marketing margin, marketing efficiency index, average net share of the consumer price, and fisherman share of one consumer rupee. Fishermen are assured of a fair price for harvest, the best quality preferred species for affordable prices for consumers, consumer satisfaction, elimination of stagnant position of supply chain, and higher contribution for the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The World Bank has engaged with the government of Sri Lanka in an advisory services and analytics (ASA) work entitled priorities for sustainably managing Sri Lanka's marine fisheries, coastal aquaculture and the ecosystems that support them. The development objective of this ASA is to support the government in prioritizing investment and policy actions to enhance the welfare and resilience of coastal fishing communities and fisheries' contribution to the national economy, including in light of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and climate risks. This ASA forms part of the Bank's support to the government in its effort to respond to, recover from, and build back better after the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, given the important role that the fisheries sector plays in the livelihoods of the coastal communities and food security of the nation as a whole. The government took swift measures to provide immediate relief and restore domestic fisheries production and the associated value chain in the first phase of the pandemic. For the recovery and build-back-better phases, the government is prioritizing sustainability and resilience, as well as infrastructure enhancement, adoption of innovative technology, institutional strengthening, and skill development to enhance productivity and global competitiveness as a means to generate employment and local value added and contribute to the balance of payments.

Fish and fish products are amongst the most highly traded food items in the world today, with most of the world’s countries reporting some fish trade. This assessment of commercial trade in CITES-listed marine species occurs within a broader context of globalization and a more general rapid expansion of the international trade in fish and fish products. It summarizes ten years (2007–2016) of trade in a subset of commercially exploited marine taxa listed in CITES Appendix II. We examine both CITES trade data reporting processes (including information on the practical elements of reporting by CITES Parties) and analyse CITES trade records. The analysis shows how, for Appendix II CITES-listed marine species, the overall number of direct export transactions reported by CITES Parties has increased sevenfold during 1990–2016 and how trade for each CITES-listed marine species sub-group has changed through time. An assessment is made, with assistance from species and trade experts, on the strengths and challenges of collating and reporting on trade in CITES-listed marine species. Additional datasets of relevance to marine species trade are highlighted, and recommendations for further refining and improving CITES trade reporting for marine species are provided.

This technical paper focuses primarily on price transmissions in small-scale and large-scale fishery and aquaculture value chains in 14 developed and developing countries. Although the study is focused on the small-scale sector, both the small-scale and large-scale sectors were analyzed in order to demonstrate differences between the two. An additional section focuses on women, summarizing their significant role in fishery and aquaculture value chains in selected countries. This is an important publication reviewing the importance of fisheries and aquaculture to livelihoods, food security and trade as well as the rationale for value chain analysis.

In June 2014, FAO member-states endorsed the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF Guidelines). These Guidelines are one of the most significant landmarks for small-scale fisheries around the world. They are comprehensive in terms of topics covered, and progressive, with their foundations based on human rights and other key principles. It can be anticipated that implementing the SSF Guidelines, whether at local, national, or regional levels, will be challenging. This book contains in-depth case studies where authors discuss the extent to which the Guidelines can help improve the realities of small-scale fishing men and women globally and make their livelihoods and communities more secure. This will require policy intervention and innovation, along with contributions of civil society organizations and academia. However, most of all it will necessitate the empowerment of fishing people so that they can become active participants in decision making on matters where their well-being and human rights are at stake. By endorsing the SSF Guidelines, states have committed themselves to support and facilitate this development. This book asks whether states can successfully “walk the talk,” and provides advice as to how they can do so. The collection of case studies sets the platform for an interactive dialogue space for researchers, policy makers, civil society and small-scale fishing communities to start the conversation about the monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the SSF Guidelines at local, national, regional and global levels. An added value is that it helps add focus to our work as civil society activists involved in ensuring the application of the SSF Guidelines. Naseegh Jaffer – General Secretary, World Forum of Fisher People (WFFP) This collection offers many ways in which institutions enabling small-scale fisheries can protect and promote sustainability, food security, customary tenure, self-management, and market access, while fostering such benefits as ecosystem-based management, protected areas, incorporation of local knowledge, and poverty alleviation. You will want to put this book in the hands of policy-makers and practitioners immediately -- and for years to come. Evelyn Pinkerton – Professor, Simon Fraser University, Canada
