Excerpt from An Universal English-German and German-English Dictionary, Vol. 2: Two Parts in Three Volumes; German and English It is the constant endeavour of the author, and as well of the publisher, of_ the present work so to improve it as to keep pace with the progress of the day. As the book is stereotyped, it was necessary to. Contract or even to omit altogether less important articles in order to give space for a number of desirable additions. It is true that the difficulty of deciding what ought; to be admitted, and what to be excluded, is ever growing with the unceasing influx of new words and combinations, but'the very multitude of the words suing for admission, prevented the author from entering upon a childish chase after the phantom of so-called completeness On the other hand it was not possible, for the' present, to find a place for a number of suggestions; kindly offered and gratefully received; in this connection Prof. Odermann, of Dresden, and, for the German and English part, Mr. C. Trafford, M. A., of Nottingham High School, deserve special mention. It is hoped that the fa vour hitherto shown to the work, will be continued to it in this its new shape. Excerpt from A Dictionary of the English and German Languages for Home and School, Vol. 2 of 2: With Special Reference to Dr. Felix Flugel's Universal English-German and German-English Dictionary; German-English Our dictionary being intended for home and school, we have kept within certain bounds, and have not aimed at absolute completeness. We have restricted the number of purely scientific and technical terms so far as to insert only such as occur in works likely to be read by the educated classes. Expressions which might have proved puzzling to those who do not boast a special or technical education, have been briefly explained On the other hand. Excerpt from A Dictionary of the English and German Languages for Home and School, Vol. 2 of 2: In Two Parts, With Special Reference to Dr. Felix Flügel's Universal English-German and German-English Dictionary; German-English Apart from containing a larger number of idioms, the present work differs from most other dictionaries of a similar size in paying more attention to the customs, manners, and institutions of the two countries, in briefly, but let us hope sufficiently explaining words relating to literature, history, and social life, and in inserting many poetical quotations, as well as foreign expressions, of frequent occurrence in English writers. Excerpt from An Universal English-German and German-English Dictionary, Vol. 1 of 3: Two Parts in Three Volumes; First Part, English and German; A-K The original work has now for a long time been out of print. Time was indeed necessary to remodel a work of this kind which aims to embrace the chief part of the literature of recent times, and to give the more im portant terms used in the arts and sciences, in manufactures, in military and naval affairs, in the trades, and in the language as at present developed in works of fiction and poetry, and in periodicals of good standing as well as in the productions of everyday life, down to the regions of slang and cant such a task requires the attention and study of a lifetime. It is, however, not enough for a work of this kind to attempt to give a vocabulary of the last stage of development of the English language. We must remember that the present era opens with the names of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, of Bacon, Milton, and all the great poets and scholars, who determined the external form of the language for a long time to come, and that the exact explanation of many difficult terms used at the commencement of this era has scarcely begun. Touching this point, Todd, the worthiest successor of Johnson, was the first lexicographer to see the need of referring to the ear liest period of English literature for the right explanations of many words even of recent times. His researches 'into the language of Spenser, Milton, Gower, and Chaucer, as well as his intimate acquaintance with the older14 preface.
