Based on a marital study in Hong Kong, this book examines changes that occur in the marital relationship today. The author concludes that as 'affective individualism' is used to characterize modern marriages in the West, 'affective familism' is a more appropriate character of marriages among the Chinese in Hong Kong.

The dramatic handover of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China on July 1, 1997, amid much tension and speculation, closes one significant colonial chapter in Asia. At the same time, it also sets the stage for new political and economic possibilities with China closely involved with a key financial center in Asia. Families are the cornerstone of Chinese society, whether in mainland China, in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Malaysia, or in the Chinese diaspora the world over.
