Excerpt from An Analysis of Intraseasonal Apple Price Movements Some of the more important policy questions in apple marketing cannot be answered on the basis of an analysis of season average prices. Among these questions are: (1) What is the most profitable allocation of apples between fresh and processing outlets? (2) Would a diversion program between alternative outlets be feasible for apple producers? (3) What part of the apple crop should be stored at harvest, and what is the optimum rate of movement from storage? In studying these problems, information is needed about demand conditions during various periods of the apple marketing season. This paper gives results of a model designed to provide this information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Market Supplies and Prices of Apples These tables were based on the car-lot unloads in these 41 cities rather than on the total supply, including trucked-in and other local receipts, because reliable information on local receipts was not available for all cities, whereas the car-lot receivers were able to furnish fairly complete records and estimates on the car-lot receipts. In most cities the car-lot sample on which the estimates were based included more than 70 per cent of the car unloads. Local receipts by motor truck often went direct to retail stores or to the consumers or were handled by small dealers and peddlers, and estimates on the quantity and varietal composition of this local supply were not as accurate as Similar information on car-lot receipts obtained from large dealers. The apple movement from important commercial States such as Washington, New York, Virginia, and Illinois is largely in car lots, and statistics on shipments and unloads are in car lots. An analysis of the car-lot supply of important markets showing the relative importance and source of varieties, supplemented by such information as is available on the local receipts, gives a good idea of the commercial apple supply. Excerpt from Apple Marketing: A Review of Economic Research, 1945-1960 Demand and supply analysis involves examination of past market experience to measure the effects of important factors which influence the price of a commodity and the amount produced and sold. In so far as these factors can be identified and their effects measured, and if market conditions do not differ Widely from the past, results from such studies can be used in predicting what might be expected under current or probable future market conditions. Demand and supply studies seek answers to a variety of questions, such as what is the price likely to be for a cr0p of a certain Size; what part of the apple cr0p Will be sold for the several processed uses and what part for fresh consumption; what is the relationship among prices of apples for these different uses; what is the expected price variation Within a season? This last type of information would be helpful to growers in deciding when to sell apples. Results from research studies made in recent years indicate that a number of factors affect prices and utilization of apples. Among these are the Size of the apple crop, the volume of competing fruits available, and consumer income after taxes (disposable income). These factors affect price and utilization of apples in different ways. For instance, when the apple cr0pis heavy, prices tend to fall in order to move the larger crop, as long as other factors do not change. Prices tend to be higher whencr0ps are small. Changes in supplies of competing fruits have a similar effect-the price tending to be lower when large quantities of such fruits are available than when small quantities are on the market. Usually prices are less affected by the availability of substitutes than by the supply of the commodity itself, but this has not always been true for apples. Excerpt from Measuring Weekly Changes in the Wholesale and Retail Movement of Apples Wholesale movement and inventory data were collected from first-hand receivers (including chain organizations) in the Philadelphia and Chicago markets. These data provide information on the general trend in retail apple movement and changes in holdings of primary wholesalers. Such information is relatively inexpensive to collect and report. The estimated cost per market would be about per market per year. This type of information would to a large degree fill a void in current market news information-specifically the volume of apples held by primary terminal market receivers However, due to time lags associated with inventory adjustments of secondary wholesalers and institutional outlets, these data do not reflect immediate changes in consumption. Moreover, they show wide fluctuations in movement from week to week, and are not too dependable as guides to the current strength or weakness in market demand. Supplemental information was obtained from apple shippers in major commercial producing areas and buyers in the Philadelphia market concerning factors they considered in making marketing decisions and the information used to evaluate the factors considered. Excerpt from Trends and Current Characteristics in the United States Apple Market This study is concerned with the structure and operation of the market for fresh and processed apples in the United States. Although studies relative to the marketing of apples in specific regions have been made, there is a noticeable absence of industry-wide studies. Some possible explanations for this situation are: (1) Industry and political pressures have forced a major portion of marketing research funds to be applied to studies of those agricultural products which are most important from the standpoint of volume of gross sales. (2) The complexities of vari ous grades and packages for products such as apples make it difficult to obtain accurate data. (3) Since major production areas are widely scattered across the country, a single industry-wide study is rather diffi cult to promote and to carry on. The ultimate objectives of this study are to: Develop a model depict ing the demand relationships for fresh and processed apples in the United States, and to compute, through linear programming techniques, a least cost pattern of interregional shipments of fresh apples in the United States under various sets of initial conditions. Excerpt from The Fruit Situation, Vol. 32: August 22, 1939 In regard to the relative importance of each of these factors affecting changes in apple prices, this analysis indicates that for the period covered, 1922-38, they rank as follows: (1) changes in the pur chasing power of consumers; (2) changes in the production of apples; (3) changes in the production of oranges. Peculiarities of the data themselves tend to invalidate a more precise statement of the relative importance of each of these factors.
