The purpose of this book is to revisit an utterly vanished earlier America by means of photographs running from 1839, where the first daguerreotypes were taken, until the eve of the First World War, which marks the end of an era, or what we may regard as the beginning of our own time.

The American Family Album series tells the often heroic stories of American immigrant groups, largely through their own words and pictures. Like any family album, the pages contain period photographs, memorabilia, selections from diaries, letters, memoirs, and newspapers. The United States Mint (Mint) is pleased to announce the official designs for the first five coins in the American Women Quarters Program.
