Algorithms In Ambient Intelligence

The advent of the digital era, the Internet, and the development of fast com puting devices that can access mass storage servers at high communication bandwidths have brought within our reach the world of ambient intelligent systems. These systems provide users with information, communication, and entertainment at any desired place and time. Since its introduction in 1998, the vision of Ambient Intelligence has attracted much attention within the re search community. Especially, the need for intelligence generated by smart al gorithms, which run on digital platforms that are integrated into consumer elec tronics devices, has strengthened the interest in Computational Intelligence. This newly developing research field, which can be positioned at the inter section of computer science, discrete mathematics, and artificial intelligence, contains a large variety of interesting topics including machine learning, con tent management, vision, speech, data mining, content augmentation, profiling, contextual awareness, feature extraction, resource management, security, and privacy.

Ambient intelligence is the vision of a technology that will become invisibly embedded in our natural surroundings, present whenever we need it, enabled by simple and effortless interactions, attuned to all our senses, adaptive to users and context-sensitive, and autonomous. High-quality information access and personalized content must be available to everybody, anywhere, and at any time. This book addresses ambient intelligence used to support human contacts and accompany an individual's path through the complicated modern world. From the technical standpoint, distributed electronic intelligence is addressed as hardware vanishing into the background. Devices used for ambient intelligence are small, low-power, low weight, and (very importantly) low-cost; they collaborate or interact with each other; and they are redundant and error-tolerant. This means that the failure of one device will not cause failure of the whole system. Since wired connections often do not exist, radio methods will play an important role for data transfer. This book addresses various aspects of ambient intelligence, from applications that are imminent since they use essentially existing technologies, to ambitious ideas whose realization is still far away, due to major unsolved technical challenges.

Held in Sophia Antipolis (France) from September the 20th to September the 22nd 2006, the first edition of the AmI.d conference tackled the latest research challenges within AmI ecosystems, presented AmI applications as well as security solutions. This volume gathers all the papers selected by the Program Committee. Authors from renowned universities and industry research centres contributed to draw a comprehensive state-of-the-art in AmI applications and security research.

Our homes anticipate when we want to wake up. Our computers predict what music we want to buy. Our cars adapt to the way we drive. This book is the outcome of a series of discussions at the Philips Symposium on Intelligent Algorithms, held in Eindhoven in December 2004. It offers exciting and practical examples of the use of intelligent algorithms in ambient and biomedical computing. It contains topics such as bioscience computing, database design, machine consciousness, scheduling, video summarization, audio classification, semantic reasoning, machine learning, tracking and localization, secure computing, and communication.

Relatively new research ?elds such as ambient intelligence, intelligent envir- ments, ubiquitous computing, and wearable devices have emerged in recent years. These ?elds are related by a common theme: making use of novel technologies to enhance user experience by providing user-centric intelligent environments, - moving computers from the desktop and making computing available anywhere and anytime. It must be said that the concept of intelligent environments is not new and beganwithhomeautomation. Thechoiceofnameforthe?eldvariessomewhatfrom continent to continent in the English-speaking world. In general intelligent space is synonymous to intelligent environments or smart spaces of which smart homes is a sub?eld. In this collection, the terms intelligent environments and ambient int- ligence are used interchangeably throughout. Such environments are made possible by permeating living spaces with intelligent technology that enhances quality of life. In particular, advances in technologies such as miniaturized sensors, advances in communication and networking technology including high-bandwidth wireless devices and the reduction in power consumption have made possible the concept of intelligent environments. Environments such as a home, an of?ce, a shopping mall, and a travel port utilize data provided by users to adapt the environment to meet the user’s needs and improve human-machine interactions. The user information is gathered either via wearable devices or by pervasive sensors or a combination of both. Intelligent environments brings together a number of research ?elds from computer science, such as arti?cial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning, and robotics as well as engineering and architecture.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 14th European Conference on Ambient Intelligence, AmI 2018, held in Larnaca, Cyprus, in November 2018. The 12 revised full papers presented together with 6 short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 36 submissions. He is Editor-in-Chief of "Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments", has chaired ACM/IEEE ICDSC 2008, and organized workshops/sessions/tutorials at ECCV, ACM MM, FG, ECAI, ICASSP, CVPR. Juan Carlos Augusto is a Lecturer at the University of Ulster, UK. He is conducting research on Smart Homes and Classrooms. He has given tutorials at IJCAI’07 and AAAI’08. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Book Series on "Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments" and the "Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments". He has co-Chaired ICOST’06, AITAmI’06/07/08, and is Workshops Chair for IE’09. Ramón López-Cózar Delgado is a Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science and Telecommunications of the University of Granada, Spain. His research interests include speech recognition and understanding, dialogue management and Ambient Intelligence. He is a member of ISCA (International Speech Communication Association), SEPLN (Spanish Society on Natural Language Processing) and AIPO (Spanish Society on HCI). This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Work-Conference on Artificial Neural Networks, IWANN 2007, held in San Sebastián, Spain in June 2007. Coverage includes theoretical concepts and neurocomputational formulations, evolutionary and genetic algorithms, data analysis, signal processing, robotics and planning motor control, as well as neural networks and other machine learning methods in cancer research.

Ambient Intelligence lies at the confluence of several trends: the continued decrease in cost and size of computing technology; the increasing availability of networking and communication infrastructure; the growing public familiarity/comfort with computing artifacts; and practical advances in artificial intelligence. These developments make it possible to contemplate the ubiquitous deployment of intelligent systems - prototypically in smart homes, but more broadly in public spaces, private automobiles and on individual appliances and hand-held devices - in applications ranging from entertainment through eldercare, to safety critical device control. Ambient Intelligence is a young field. As a result, it has been natural to wonder what the technology can do to improve the way we live. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly important to ask: "What do we want?" since the intent is to embed technology in new and pervasive ways. The contributions in this volume provide a window into the visions and trends currently dominating the area of Ambient Intelligence. This publication is divided into three sections. The first describes visions for the future of Ambient Intelligence, the second addresses core technology of the field and the third provides an analysis of elements of the area which will demand special consideration during the future development of the area.
