Talking over the different events of the cruise, which had lasted two years, he narrated the following curious incident which had befallen them: - One morning at daybreak, when lying becalmed, they found themselves in the midst of a shoal of sperm whales, and all four of their boats were speedily lowered and chase given. Two of them proved successful, and, by the afternoon, had returned to the ship, towing their captured prey; but the others were not so fortunate. In consequence of family connections, and his father's occupation, he had much opportunity of being in the society of seafaring men, and their tales of peril and adventure fostered his own inclination for the life of a sailor. At one time he was nearly joining the navy, but circumstances required him to remain in his father's business house at Oporto till he was beyond the age for entering the King's service. He never, however, lost his first taste, and he had opportunity for several voyages.
