Excerpt from Adventures Ashore and Afloat A short time since I happened to be in Valparaiso, where I made the acquaintance of an American, one of the officers of the United States whaling-ship Nantucket, which had run in from her fishing-grounds in the Pacific, to obtain a supply of water and fresh provisions. Talking over the different events of the cruise, which had lasted two years, he narrated the following curious incident which had befallen them: - One morning at daybreak, when lying becalmed, they found themselves in the midst of a shoal of sperm whales, and all four of their boats were speedily lowered and chase given. Two of them proved successful, and, by the afternoon, had returned to the ship, towing their captured prey; but the others were not so fortunate. Excerpt from Adventures Afloat and Ashore, Vol. 1 of 2 Taste than any of his predecessors. He is most jolly-lookin g, and his appearance does not speak falsely; moreover, he can sing a good song, and tell a pleasant anecdote but, better still, he knows how to have a dinner properly cooked and served - what good wine is, for he keeps it. His Wife - I would not say that the grey mare is the better horse, for such would be nu true; but she is a sensible, good, kind-hearted woman, whose face looks ever bright and happy. Excerpt from James Braithwaite, the Supercargo: The Story of His Adventures Ashore and Afloat From his earliest boyhood young Kingston evinced a strong liking for the sea. In consequence of family connections, and his father's occupation, he had much opportunity of being in the society of seafaring men, and their tales of peril and adventure fostered his own inclination for the life of a sailor. At one time he was nearly joining the navy, but circumstances required him to remain in his father's business house at Oporto till he was beyond the age for entering the King's service. He never, however, lost his first taste, and he had opportunity for several voyages. To the end of his days he cherished an ardent affection for sea men, and took deep interest in everything that tended to their welfare. He was proud, also, of the history of the British navy, as he has shown in many of his Spirit-stirring sea-stories. When the Boy's Own Paper was started, in 1879, he led off with a characteristic story of the navy in the time of the great wars of the reign of George III., under the title of From Powder Monkey to Admiral. Our story opens in the city of St Louis; and I will here take time by.the forelock, and inform the gentle reader that it closes without going outside of-v the corporation limits. It was a bright morning in autumn, and the sun was up about as high as he generally gets at 10 a.m. Dennis Magannagin, a rising young bootblack, was seen walking hurriedly back and forth in front of a lamp-post, at the base of which was deposited his professional outfit. The little tin box was branded, "Mason's best oil blackin, warranted to turn water." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
