"The present study is a thirteen-year follow up of subjects by Steven McNeel and Mirjam Fauth of Bethel University of their studies of moral judgment, empathy, and orthodoxy. Data were collected in 2006 (13 years following initial testing) from participants not reached for the previous follow-up study. Results showed significant growth in moral judgment during college years, and significant regression in P-scored at the time of alumni testing. Empathy but not orthodoxy, showed significant change over time. Overall empathy, orthodoxy, and diversity scores did not show statistically significant correlation with moral development scores. Further analysis revealed correlation between moral development and perspective-talking (an empathy subset), and social problems (a subset of diversity)."--leaf 4.

Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled EMPATHY AND REASON IN ETHICS: EXPLORING A FRAMEWORK FOR MORAL JUDGMENT submitted by CHAN MIU HUNG BRIDGET in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Education, The University of Hong Kong August 2003 The problem of defending morality in a way which involves the roles of empathy and reason in ethics has caught the attention of many philosophers. Broadly speaking, ethical subjectivism ignores reason while ethical objectivism ignores feeling. Consensus is difficult to achieve. Based on the premise that both subjectivism and objectivism cannot be solely sufficient for moral judgment, this dissertation attempts to offer a framework for moral judgment by defending the adoption of the perspective of empathic logic as the essence in order to achieve a better balance between objective rules and subjective feelings in the discussion of morality. Empathic logic is a position that allows empathy to work with reason in our ambiguous value-laden contexts. It is hoped that by invoking a perspective that includes both empathy and logic a wider spectrum of moral judgments can be covered in an account of moral conduct. Over the past decade prominent philosophers and theologians have returned the virtues to a significant place in moral reflection. Transformed Judgment contributes to the growing literature by arguing that the most coherent account of moral judgment is one grounded in, and lived in the presence of, the Triune God. L. Gregory Jones suggests that while there has been considerable discussion of the virtues and the activity of moral judgment, the discussion has tended to neglect the importance of friendship and the ways in which people learn to acquire and exercise the virtues in making wise moral judgments. The Christian tradition's claim that human beings are to live in relation to the mystery of the Triune God provides a distinctive understanding of friendship, the virtues, and moral judgment, claims Jones. Drawing on the thought of Thomas Aquinas, he develops his claim that the primary friendship a person should have is with the God who has befriended humanity in Jesus Christ; such friendship calls forth a life of transformative discipleship in friendship with others. Jones criticizes recent exponents of the virtues such as Martha Nussbaum, Edmund Pincoffs, and Stanley Hauerwas for failing to adequately recognize the difference theological claims make for ethics and moral judgment. He argues that an adequate understanding of how the virtues are acquired and character is formed reveals that theological claims about such matters as God, the world, and life and death make a decisive difference in moral judgment. Drawing on a wide range of literature from the philosophy of language and moral philosophy to theology and theological ethics, Jones establishes why it is crucial to attend to not only the formation of moral judgments, but also to transformation in moral judgment.

The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Jesus says 'Do not judge' yet our human instinct often leads us to harsh judgements of others. In a world where snap judgements are made in seconds on social media, how can Christians resist the urge to join in? Christians may be especially adept at dressing up their judgement of others as righteousness and being a witness for Christ without recognising the psychological and spiritual pitfalls. It remains easier to point the finger at clearer and more observable sins than to recognise the way judgementalism corrupts us. In this insightful and wise book, Fraser Dyer helps us to understand what compels Christians to be judgemental towards others. He explores the condemnation of judgementalism throughout scripture, and particularly in the ministry and teaching of Christ. He also includes a set of practical approaches, rooted in Christian spirituality, to enable us to journey from the self-righteousness of judgementalism towards love of God and neighbour.

Using developmental psychological theory from Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of moral development, Norma Hann's emphasis on the role of emotion and defense mechanisms in self-perceptions related to morality, and Carol Gilligan's theory of sexual differences in ethics, as well as Martin Hoffman's theory of empathic development, Shelton constructs a moral theory rooted in the human capacity for empathy. He considers how empathy is developed, how emotions may be developed, and how persons become blind to their own immorality, ending with a brief caution about the limits of empathy. Recommended for all libraries, but especially for public and seminary libraries.

This volume highlights the complex relations between empathy, individualizing and groupish moral intuitions, (anticipated) moral emotions, and moral judgment. It is rooted in the notion that human moral systems were not immune to evolutionary processes and thus shaped by biological and cultural evolutionary forces (e.g. natural selection, genetic drift, mutation, sexual selection, cultural mutation, ecological selection pressures, etc.). This edition proposes a conceptual model of both distal and proximal variables to integrate insights from Moral Foundations Theory with theorizing on commitment strategies by linking empathy and moral intuitions to moral emotions (guilt, anger, disgust), and moral judgment in the context of distinct moral violations. The proposed model is tested using data from a convenience sample of young adults in Belgium, who responded to written hypothetical scenarios in a large-scale online survey. This volume is ideal for moral theory researchers in criminology, psychology, and related disciplines
