Scientific Study from the year 2023 in the subject Chemistry - Food Chemistry, grade: A, University of Ibadan, language: English, abstract: A study was carried out on the forensic entomotoxicological evaluation of carrion insects of fishes poisoned with dichlorvos on the main campus of the University of Ibadan. Fishes (Clarias gariepinus) for the study were obtained from the fish farm on the University Campus. The fishes were then euthanized with 5ml of dichlorvos while the control was without poison. Adult carrion insects were collected from the fish carrion using a sweep net. The larvae were collected into a bowl by using a scoop, immobilized with hot water and later placed in sample bottles containing 70% ethanol. Pupae were collected using forceps. Carcass temperature was measured using infrared thermometer while relative humidity was recorded from a digital hygrometer. Calliphoridae and Muscidae were the initial pioneers of the decomposing carcass and were seen during the fresh stage, sarcophagidae was seen shortly after the fresh stage of decomposition. The highest mean temperature value for the fish treated with 5ml Dichlorvos was 31.30C while its lowest mean value was 22.60C. It was observed that the temperature on the ninth day was higher than the other days. This is attributed to the heat generated by the active maggots at that stage of decomposition. Dichlorvos was found to retard the growth of carrion larva as shown in Musca domestica larvae when compared with the control. Fast decomposition rate was recorded due to high ambient and carcass temperature. It can be concluded from this study that carrion insects can be used in solving crime puzzles through the extrication of post mortem intervals in conjunction with environmental variables. Since fish carrion in this study attracted a sizable number of carrion insects, it is recommended that fish be used in future forensic case and experimental studies.

Forensic entomological field and laboratory studies were conducted to obtain data currently missing or conflicting in the literature. The first goal of this project was to identify and qualitatively assess the major taxa of forensic importance in southwest Virginia. Carcasses of the domestic pig, Sus scrofa L., were placed in field conditions and allowed to decompose until they reached the advanced stage of decay. Over 50 taxa were collected and identified, with Phormia regina, Phaenicia coeruleiviridis, Phaenicia sericata, Calliphora spp., Sarcophaga utilis, Musca domestica, Hydrotaea leucostoma, Stearibia nigriceps, Prochyliza xanthostoma, and Meroplius minutus among the most commonly observed fly species, and Creophilis maxillosus, Platydracus maculosus, Aleochara lata, Oiceoptoma noveboracense, Necrodes surinamensis, and Necrophila americana among the most commonly observed beetle species. The second objective of this study was to analyze successional patterns of taxa collected and identified in the carrion-insect succession studies. Occurrence matrices were constructed for the successional patterns of insect taxa during 21 sampling intervals in the spring and eight intervals in the summer studies. Permutation analyses of the occurrence matrices showed that the successional patterns of insect taxa were similar between spring 2001 and 2002 (P = 0.001) and between summer 2001 and 2002 (P = 0.007). Results indicated that the successional patterns appear to be typical for the seasonal periods. The third objective of this study was to analyze the effects of antemortem ingestion of ethanol by pigs on insect successional patterns and development rates.

As Ecology teachers ourselves we have become increasingly aware of the lack of a single comprehensive textbook of Ecvlogy which we can recommend unreservedly to our students. While general, review texts are readily available in other fields, recent publications in Ecology have tended for the most part to be small, specialised works on single aspects of the subject. Such general texts as are available are often rather too detailed and, in addition, tend to be somewhat biased towards one aspect of the discipline or another and are thus not truly balanced syntheses of current knowledge. Ecology is, in addition, a rapidly developing subject: new information is being gathered all the time on a variety of key questions; new approaches and techniques open up whole new areas of research and establish new principles. Already things have changed radically since the early '70s and we feel there is a need for an up to date student text that will include some of this newer material. We have tried, therefore, to create a text that will review all the major principles and tenets within the whole field of Ecology, presenting the generally accepted theories and fundamentals and reviewing carefully the evidence on which such principles have been founded. While recent developments in ecological thought are emphasised, we hope that these will not dominate the material to the extent where the older-established principles are ignored or overlooked.
