Excerpt from A Short History of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem: From Its Earliest Foundation in 1014 to the End of the Great War of 1914-1918 The first edition of this work was printed in October 1914 (under the title of "Chivalry and the Wounded"), and four thousand copies carried swiftly to many parts of the Empire a vivid picture of nine centuries of heroic achievement, compressed into one hundred pages. "An excellent book," wrote Field-Marshal Sir Evelyn Wood, V.C.: "few soldiers could have surpassed this narrative of the military exploits of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem." This new and enlarged edition, with its concentrated yet comprehensive account of the labours of the Order during the four epic years of the Great War, is further improved by a detailed Index and two illustrations. The Hospitallers were a religious order, founded in Jerusalem by 1099, devoted to nursing and to fighting the infidel. With their fellow knights, the Templars, they played a heroic part in the defence of the Holy Land, defending great castles, such as Krak des Chevaliers, while at the same time providing exemplary nursing care for the poor. Hospitallers is an illustrated history, by a leading historian of the crusades, of this remarkable body, the heir of which is the Order of St. John.
