In 1821, after four centuries under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, the Greek people rose in revolt. Seven years later, with battles lost and battles won, the first Greek state became a reality with the help of the great European powers of the day â England, France and Russia. The new state covered only a small part of the lands inhabited by Greeks but in the next 150 years, the frontiers of the initial state were expanded as other sections inhabited by Greeks were liberated. It was not an unbroken process. Other Greeks were forced to leave their ancestral homes and seek refuge in the free country. Within Greece, progress was an uneven enterprise, with moments of success and achievement and with dark days of failure, desperation and internal strife. In the pages of this book, the author unfolds this fascinating story in a vivid prose, with the authority that comes from solid scholarship and from the personal knowledge of one who lived through some of the events he describes.

This history surveys the history of the Greek people from the declining years of the Byzantine Empire to the late twentieth-century. The second edition includes a topical chapter to bring the account up to the late 1980s.

Every Greek and every friend of the country knows the date 1821, when the banner of revolution was raised against the empire of the Ottoman Turks, and the story of 'Modern Greece' is usually said to begin. Less well known, but of even greater importance, was the international recognition given to Greece as an independent state with full sovereign rights, as early as 1830. The book spans the period from 1797, when Rigas Velestinlis published a constitution for an imaginary 'Hellenic Republic', at the cost of his life, to the establishment of the modern Olympic Games, in Athens in 1896, an occasion which sealed with international approval the hard-won self-image of 'Modern Greece' as it had become established over the previous century.

When Greece's economic troubles began to threaten the stability of the European Union in 2010, the nation found itself in the center of a whirlwind of international finger-pointing.
