Excerpt from A Primer of Burns These pages are mainly intended to supply the reader of Burns with such facts concerning his life and works, as are most necessary for the understanding of his poetry. These facts have been chiefly derived from the editions by Chambers and Scott Douglas; the latter's arrangement of the poems has also been followed in tracing the development of the poet's work. The bibliography has been selected from various sources, and it is hoped that no work of importance has been omitted. Excerpt from Robert Burns But otherwise the story of Burns's life has been told with such minuteness of detail, that the internal evidence of his poetry would seem only to be called in to verify or correct the verdict of tradition and the garbled gossip of those wise after the fact of his fame. It is so easy after a man has compelled the attention of the world to fill up the empty years of his life when he was all unknown to fame, with illustrative anecdotes and almost forgotten incidents, revealed and coloured by the light of after events! This is a penalty of genius, and it is sometimes called fame, as if fame were a gift given of the world out of a boundless and unintelligent curiosity, and not the life-record or work achieved. It is easier to collect ana and to make them into the patchwork pattern of a life than to read the character of the man in his writings; and patchwork, of necessity, has more of colour than the homespun web of a peasant-poet. Excerpt from The Book of Robert Burns, Vol. 3 of 3: Genealogical and Historical Memoirs of the Poet His Associates and Those Celebrated in His Writing Having been asked, with a View to the completion of this Work, to prepare a short biography of Burns, I have aimed at writing a concise narrative, setting forth as many of the incidents of the Poet's career as the available space would allow, and at making as large use as possible of the Poet's own words. For the purpose of writing a Life' of Burns, the late Dr. Charles Rogers had gathered a mass of notes; but these notes could have been advantageously utilised only by Dr. Rogers himself. Every one knows that the subject of the Poet's Life and Writings has already been fully and powerfully dealt with by many eminent authors. Having agreed, however, though not without misgivings, to complete Vol. III. Of the Book of Robert Burns, I have tried to perform my task clearly, faithfully, and sympathetically. Excerpt from Two Lectures on the Primary and Secondary Treatment of Burns The following Lectures were addressed to the pupils attending my clinical class, and were intended solely for their instruction. The principles which they inculcate I have endeavoured to enforce, by precept and example, for many years. As the subject is one of very general importance, ! have, at the instigation of an old pupil and friend, determined to give them more publicity. I have been further induced to take this step from the numerous instances of deformity and lameness which present themselves every year for admission into St. Bartholomew's requiring very painful and serious operations; the majority of which might unquestionably have been prevented, if the rules contained in the following pages had been attended to. Excerpt from The Genius, and Character of Burns Burns is by far the greatest poet that ever sprung from the bosom of the people, and lived and died in an humble condition. Indeed, no country in the world but Scotland could have produced such a man; and he will be for ever regarded as these glorious representative of the genius of his country. He was born a poet, if ever man was, and to his native genius alone is owing the perpetuity of his fame. For he manifestly had never very deeply studied poetry as an art, nor reasoned much about its principles, nor looked abroad with the wide ken of intellect for objects and subjects on which to pour out his inspiration. The condition of the peasantry of Scotland, the happiest, perhaps, that providence ever allowed to the children of labor, was? not surveyed and speculated on by him as the field of poetry, but as the field of his own existence; and he chronicled the events that passed there, not merely as food for his imagination as a poet, but as food for his heart as a man. Hence, when inspired to compose poetry, poetry came gushing up from the well of his human affections, and he had nothing more to do, than to pour it. like streams irrigating a meadow, in many a cheerful tide over the drooping flowers and fading verdure of life.
