A traveller through the length and breadth of England is soon aware of cultural differences, some of which are clearly visible in the landscape. The eminent English historian Charles Phythian-Adams has put forth that England, through much of the last millennium, could be divided into regional societies, which broadly coincided with groups of pre-1974 counties. These shire assemblages in turn lay largely within the major river drainage systems of the country. In this unusual study Alan Fox tests for, and establishes, the presence of an informal frontier between two of the proposed societies astride the Leicestershire-Lincolnshire border, which lies on the watershed between the Trent and Witham drainage basins. The evidence presented suggests a strong case for a cultural frontier zone, which is announced by a largely empty landscape astride the border between the contrasting settlement patterns of these neighbouring counties.

"History shows us hard times happen. When they do will you have the skills you need to thrive? Our ancestors braved every crisis imaginable. From plague, to war, to famine. Only they did it without modern tech, overly-complex supply chains or even other people to help them. Simply by using the self-reliant skills and expertise, that are disappearing fast, locked in this book. Inside: How to preserve food the old-fashioned way, including: canning, salting, dehydrating, pickling, smoking and more. The very best survival guns of the old west. How to filter water using just what's in your yard. Where free land can be had in the USA. How to make non-addictive "frontier morphine" and 45 more powerful remedies lost to history. 75 items that'll outvalue gold in a crisis. How to hunt and tan game like a pioneer. The very best long-lasting "forever foods", including a Viking staple with a 3-year shelf life, how to make pocket-portable soup, and the Native American "sweet meat" that can last 100 years. And more ..." -- Amazon.com.

"Between the early seventeenth century and the early twentieth, nearly all the land in the United States was transferred from American Indians to whites. This dramatic transformation has been understood in two very different ways - as a series of consensual transactions, but also as a process of violent conquest. Both views cannot be correct. How did Indians actually lose their land?" "Stuart Banner provides the first comprehensive answer. He argues that neither simple coercion nor simple consent reflects the complicated legal history of land transfers. Instead, time, place, and the balance of power between Indians and settlers decided the outcome of land struggles. As the power of whites grew, they were able to establish the legal institutions and the rules by which land transactions would be made and enforced." "How the Indians Lost Their Land reveals how subtle changes in the law can determine the fate of a nation, and our understanding of the past."--
