Basingstoke has had a long history and is much more then just an overspill for London. Mentioned in the Domesday book and a successful Market town for many centuries, the town also played a pivotal role in the English civil war, Oliver Cromwell staying there towards the end of the conflict. A wonderful account for a local historian. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
