Excerpt from A History of New York, for Schools, Vol. 1 of 2 The author of the History of New York, for Schools, has long been engaged in collecting materials for a history of the city and environs, from the earliest period to the adoption of the Federal Constitution. His intention is, that the City of New York shall be the central point in his work, the environs a wide circuit, comprehending all that is connected with that point, or that can elucidate its history. This work he intends to publish by subscription; and it must necessarily be years before its accomplishment. In the mean time, he presents these little volumes as precursors, in the hopes of inspiring the rising generation with a desire to obtain a thorough knowledge of their country, a love of her institutions, and a reverence for the men to whom they owe the blessings they enjoy. That these men may be known, they must be separated from the mass, which an indiscriminate tendency to applaud, or condemn, has generated. No one can appreciate Washington who is unacquainted with the characters of those who endeavoured to subvert him. If this abridged work is adopted in our schools, the youth of New York will be prepared for the study of a more comprehensive history of the State; and it shall be the endeavour of the author to present it to the publick. Excerpt from History of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2: No; II., Or Uncle Philip's Conversations With the Children About New-York I send you now some farther conversations which I have had with the children about the his tory of our own country; and when you print these, I hope that all the little boys and girls in America will be as much pleased with them as the young companions of your old uncle seemed to be while we were talking. We have this time been talking about the History of our own state, N ew York; and I suppose that my young friends were pleased, because we were speaking of many things that occurred upon the very same soil upon which we now walk. At any rate, they seemed happy, and I was contented to amuse and instruct them. I am very glad that they are all so much pleased with the study of history, for it will be a useful pleasure to them. You know, too, that no man is well educated unless he has studied the history of the world, and particularly the his tory of his own country. So I am delighted that the children are all determined, in this particular, to be well educated.vni preface. Excerpt from New York, Vol. 1: Old New; Its Story, Streets, and Landmarks New York's foster sons are her most devoted ones. If the writer's late gleanings in old fields awaken a wider and livelier interest in the brave but modest beginnings of the city of his adoption, and in the men and women who have helped to shape its destiny, he will feel that the reward for his labors is a generous one. The preparation of this work has necessarily involved a study of every noteworthy authority dealing with the subject, but the writer especially acknowledges the helpful suggestiveness of a recent series of articles by Mrs. Schuyler Van Rensselaer on "New York and its Historians." No student of the city's history who would get to the root of things can afford to neglect them. He also wishes to make acknowledgment to Mr. A. H. Clark, whose unrivalled knowledge of colonial affairs is always at the command of his friends. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the City of New York, Vol. 1 The earliest record of the existence of the American Continent is found among the literary legacies of the Icelanders of the tenth century, who were superior to the continental people of that age both in mental vigor and physical endurance. But their discoveries were the result of hap hazard adventure rather than scientific probabilities, and their efforts at colonization were signal failures. From their geographical works we find that they supposed these western lands to be a part of Europe; and, while the accounts of their expeditions were carefully preserved, not a line was committed to parchment until many centuries had passed, so that there is very little reason for presuming that succeeding generations were materially benefited by reason of them. In this radical reassessment, Alun Munslow challenges conventional notions of history and offers a new vision of historical thinking and practice. Deploying a range of concepts such as scepticism, aesthetics, ethics, standpoint, irony, authorship and a new understanding of truth, The Future of History examines history as a form of knowledge in itself, arguing that in the future the multiple forms of its expression will be as significant as its content. This thought-provoking, challenging and unique book offers a way forward for history after postmodernism and is essential reading for anyone asking the question 'what is history?'.

Though best known as an adventurer who entered Mecca in disguise and sought the source of the White Nile, Richard Burton contributed so forcefully to his generation that he provides us with a singularly panoramic perspective of the Victorian world. This book is an important contribution to our understanding of a remarkable man and a crucial era.
