A Comprehensive Catalog Of Oil Lamps Of The Holy Land From The Adler Collection

The ceramic oil lamps in this collection once burned in the Holy Land, lit by the oil of its abundant olive trees and conceived by the imagination of its early inhabitants. The lamps' symbols, designs, shape and decorations allow us to learn about the time and place they were made, and the culture and standard of living of those who used them.

This catalogue publishes the closed pottery oil lamps in the collection of the Israel Antiquities Authority, and follows the previous volume of saucer lamps. It caintains mainly intact oil lamps discovered in exavations and listed with the Antiquities Authority up to the year 1988.

In the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum are more than six hundred ancient lamps that span the sixth century BCE to the seventh century CE, most from the Roman Imperial period and largely created in Asia Minor or North Africa. These lamps have much to reveal about life, religion, pottery, and trade in the ancient Graeco-Roman world. Following the failure of the Bar-Kokhba revolt in the second century, the majority of the Jewish population of Palestine migrated northward away from Jerusalem to join the communities of Jews in Galilee and the Golan Heights. Although rabbinic sources indicate that from the second century onward the demographic center of Jewish Palestine was in Galilee, archaeological evidence of Jewish communities is found in the southern part of the country as well. In The Ancient Synagogues of Southern Palestine, 300-800 C.E., Steve Werlin considers ten synagogues uncovered in southern Palestine.
