A Brief Outline of the History of Libraries is written by Justus Lipsius, a Belgian philologist and humanist who wrote several books capitalizing on his love of philosophy and his penchant for detailed explorations of philosophical thought. This particular book, however, highlights a completely different interest of Lipsius' his passion for the cultivation of knowledge and the historic collection of ancient texts. This book is a great asset for readers interested in the origins of the modern library, for those that have an intense love of books, or even those who have worked in libraries and can appreciate the history of this hallowed institution. For Lipsius, the word library can describe three very different things: a place where books are kept, a physical bookcase, or books themselves. Lipsius' ode to libraries begins with an exploration of the history of the book, more specifically printed text, and how it rose to become a prevalent mode of communication in the modern world. Lipsius then explains how individuals began to collect these printed texts and store them in their homes, generally on aptly named "bookshelves." As printed texts became more and more mainstream and the intrinsic value of the book became a known commodity, groups or organizations quickly followed to collect, organize, and store said materials: what is known today as a library. Justus Lipsius' book A Brief Outline of the History of Libraries holds a considerable amount of information on the beginning of the printed word and the creation of libraries. This is an interesting read for anyone interested in the history of books, and especially people who have utilized or worked in libraries. This is a beginner book which sets solid groundwork for a more detailed exploration into the history of libraries. Excerpt from The Story of Libraries and Book-Collecting Readers, especially if they be librarians, will look for an apology from a writer who dares to follow in the footsteps of Edward Edwards. But there is some justification. Memoirs of Libraries is out of print, and expensive to buy second-hand while in some parts it is not up to date. A summary history, published at a popular price, seemed necessary for the elementary student and the general reader, and I have attempted to provide it. Excerpt from The Beginnings of Libraries A considerable mass of memoranda on the early history of libraries has been gathered by the author of this essay during the last twenty-five years, and out of this material various essays have been published from time to time on Antediluvian Libraries, Medieval Libraries, Some Old Egyptian Librarians, etc. The fact that the unworked mass of modern information through excavations is so great as to put off for a long time still a systematic treatise, has led to the plan of publishing these essays and addresses from time to time as completed and in uniform style. Excerpt from The Librarians of Harvard College The principle sources for the history of the Library may be here summarized. The earlier history is to be found in the manuscript Records of the Corporation and of the Board of Overseers, which contain frequent notices of the Library and of the appoint ments of Librarians; lists of books given; codes of laws for its administration, and amendments thereto; and other matters of importance. The Treasurer's books and the books of letters, especially those from Thomas Hollis, also contain much of value. The Library's own manuscript records date back only to the fire of 1764; and, indeed, prior to Mr. Sibley's day, they are scanty and unsystematic. There is a ms. Catalogue, not dated, but probably prepared about 1780 or 1790, which contains the names of the givers of books then in the Library. For Sibley's own administration his manu script Library Journal, containing, besides his. Annual reports, a detailed record of events, is invaluable. This and his letter-books are preserved in the College Archives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Libraries of Greater New York: Manual and Historical Sketch of the New York Library Club The List of libraries was in type in October, 1901, when the receipt of advance sheets from the Report of the United States Commissioner of Education for 1899-1900, giving statistics of "Public, society and school libraries," and of the "Annual report, 1900," on Public libraries, issued by the University of the State of New York, brought to light a number of libraries in New York City of which the Committee had no previous knowledge, although every available source of information had been examined. Some two hundred additional circulars of inquiry were sent out, and as a result more than one hundred libraries were added. In several instances repeated calls for information were not responded to; these libraries are indicated in the List by an asterisk (*) preceding the name. The Committee is indebted to its chairman for compiling the List of libraries, to Mr. Nelson for the "Historical sketch" and the other historical matter in the "Manual," and to Mr. Bostwick for the List of "Members" of the Club. Thanks are due and are cordially tendered to all who have aided the Committee in the compilation of this record of library progress in New York City.
