Excerpt from The Baptist History of South Dakota This generation is living in a epoch of history making. The United States census of 1890 revealed facts respecting the material growth and development of this country to which there has been no parallel in the history of the world. Invention has multiplied many fold mans capacity and power for work. By the application of these inventions to the farm and to the factory, to commerce and to transportation, this growth has been made possible. When the second half of the century now drawing to a close began, the vast region known as the Mississippi valley was for the most part the hunting ground of the red man, and the home of the buffalo and the antelope. Under the industrious hand of the pioneer settler, the desert has been made to blossom as the rose. In 1850 the population of the twelve prairie states, including Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Missouri, was 5,400,000; in 1890 it was 22,362,000. During this period of forty years, the virgin soil in these twelve states was changed into productive farms, at the rate of 13,000 acres per day. Two-thirds of the grain produced, and of the live stock raised, are found in these twelve states. Their development in manufacturing interests has not been less marvellous. In 1850 they reported 111,000 operatives earning $20,000,000 in wages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Gold sparked the major migration of white settlers to the Dakota Territory a century ago, but for South Dakota, grass proved to be the real bonanza. Today more and more Americans are coming to understand the almost mystical appeal of the horizon and the primitive pull of the earth that make South Dakota one of the few remaining places where the individual can enjoy real isolation and a sense of standing apart from the crowd.

Excerpt from Census Report of South Dakota for 1895 At the close of the report of counties you will find table showing the population by counties of 1890, also 1895, and the loss or gain of each county since 1890. At the bottom of the lists for 1890 and 1895 is shown the total populations of 1890 and 1895. It also shows a State gain of since 1890, which fact refutes the statements that have been made and supported by persons desirous of reflecting upon our young State that it is decreasing in population.
